You can find out more about us and Hoima Regional Referral Hospital by visiting hhhcharity.org.uk At the moment we are able to fund three or four visits a year for roughly 8 people lasting about two weeks. The main specialities they have asked for are maternity, paediatrics and anaesthetics but that still leaves room for other specialities including management. We are looking for people with particular skills and experience. We try to define specific objectives for each visit based on the report of the last one. The aim is to help them increase their capacity to deliver a better service. We are there to teach, to train and help them improve their operating systems. We also need to encourage leadership, accountability, team-work, multidisciplinary working, care planning, patient monitoring and systems to improve patient safety. Their workload is tremendous and they tend to see us as extra pairs of hands to take over the care of the difficult cases. If lives are at risk it may be ethically impossible to do otherwise but if we get too involved in the care of individual patients it limits our ability to do what we came for. You will see plenty of interesting cases but we are not there for medical tourism. We have to achieve a balance in terms of speciality, seniority, people who have been before and newcomers and to keep the size of the party to reasonable limits. At the moment we have more people wanting to go than we can accommodate so it may not be possible to include you on the next visit or even in the year ahead. We hope you will understand this and not feel too disappointed if you are not selected straight away. HHH will pay for travel and medical group insurance, airport transfers, accommodation, food and water (but not other fluids) whilst you are in Uganda. We ask you to make a gift aided donation equivalent to your air fare. We regret that HHH is unable to pay for immunisations and malaria prophylaxis, travel to or from a UK airport or any other expenses. If you work for HHFT you may be able to apply for discretionary leave for part of your working visit to Hoima. In principle the Trust may grant you one day of discretionary leave for every two days you are working in Hoima. Time spent on R&R is not included and the remainder has to come out of your annual leave. This is subject to the Trusts discretionary leave policy and agreement with your departmental manager. There is no automatic right to discretionary leave. During the visit, most people like to go for a couple of days R&R to one of the safari parks. We try to include this in the programme but you will have to pay for it yourself. When you are selected, we will give you our Uganda briefing which tells you about what to bring, what to wear and various dos and donts while living and working there.
